Michael Wilkinson who’s the costume designer of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, during an interview at the Comic Con Experience in San Paulo, Brazil, confirmed that the scenes with Batman in the Gaslight suit or also known as the Knightmare suit, is in fact a dream that Bruce is having in the film. Wilkinson confirmed this after being asked about it during the interview:
It is a different look, Zack had a great idea of this sort of nightmareish vision, where that it’s almost a vision of the future, post-apocalyptic vision. It’s like a dream that Ben has. We wanted to, it almost sort of has this Mad Max quality to it, like ‘it’s the end of the world and we’re trying to survive’. Then of course Superman and he’s minions come. It’s in a way sort of representing the amazing amount, sort of obsessive quality that Bruce Wayne has with the threat of Superman.
In this film Superman, of course he’s normally seen as a figure of hope, incredible positive thing. But in this film his motivation, consequences of his actions are really being questioned by the world. Is he a savior or a dangerous alien with unknown intentions? And this becomes an obsession for Bruce Wayne, he really wants to sort it out, so it manifested into this incredible dream, that Zack decided to create.
