Chris Pine Being Rumored to be Green Lantern Have Any Truth to it?

Umberto Gonzalez of Latino Review reported yesterday that Chris Pine (Star Trek) is rumored as being Warner Bros.’ choice to play Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern in the DC Cinematic Universe

We didn’t report this rumor yesterday because we have a hard time believing many of Gonzalez’s reports (be rumored or not) as they’ve been often not true in regards to the DC Cinematic Universe.

Though now that we’ve allowed the rumor to settle in, here’s our take on it.

Lets start by stating facts– back in 2009 there were heavy rumors that Chris Pine was offered the role of Green Lantern for the 2011 film, one of the sources to this rumor was in fact started by, you guessed it– Latino Review.

“I’m sorry to be the one to report that these stories are just NOT true,” writes Collider’s Steve “Frosty” Weintraub. “At least according to my source, and mine is the same one that said Anton Yelchin wasn’t in the running either. Trust me, the person I’m speaking with would know. While Latino Review and IESB have definitely broken a lot of casting stories, this is not going to be one of them.” Source: MTV 3/20/09

The rumor became active enough in the media that Chris Pine himself had to debunk it as not being true in an interview with MTV News.

“No, I had a meeting with [casting director] Pam Dixon and [executive producer] Donald De Line, but a meeting was all it was,” Pine told MTV News. “I have not been offered squat. I do not have the part and haven’t read a script.” Source: MTV

As we all know Ryan Reynolds was the one who in fact ended up with the role of Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern film from 2011.

But with that being said, would Pine be against the idea if given a real opportunity? In the same interview with MTV New in 2009, Pine had this to say about taking on a comic book film:

“I’m not a big comic book fan,” he explained. Furthermore, the lack of a script in hand may be a barrier to Pine knowing if he even wants the part.

“I’m a fan of stories,” Pine said. “So if there’s a story to be told, I love to tell a good story. But there’s not a particular superhero or comic book character that I’d like to play.” Source: MTV

Seeing the type of creative team Warner Bros. is infusing into the DC Cinematic Universe, there’s no doubt if the Green Lantern film that’s slated for 2020, is given the right director and screenplay, someone like Chris Pine would have a hard time saying “no”.

Much like Jai Courtney did with Suicide Squad after swearing to never doing a comic book movie, but quickly changing his mind once learning David Ayer was to director and writer Suicide Squad.

Our conclusion to this rumor is– take it with a gran of salt, with a small possibly of it being true. Because at least Chris Pine has the history of taking part in a meeting for a Green Lantern film in the past.
