Shazam! director David F. Sandberg confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, that the name of Captain Marvel, which was originally used for the character, won’t be used in his movie due to the confusion with the Marvel character with the same name, who’s also receiving a standalone movie.
Sandberg goes on to say that they’ll have a bit of fun with it in the movie, but he’s going to be known as “Shazam”:
“Let’s just say we’re going to have a bit of fun with that in the movie, but he’s basically known as Shazam, which makes sense because of the confusion.”
Shazam! releases in theaters on April 5th, 2019.
