Harley Quinn’s co-creator on the Batman Animated Series Paul Dini, during an interview on the Shanlian On Batman podcast, spoke on Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn look in Suicide Squad by defending it.

Dini goes on to explain why it has to be different from the animated series, he also defends Leto’s Joker look, Ben Affleck as Batman and praising the car chase scene from the Suicide Squad trailer, by stating it was something he would never imagine seeing on film.

Dini defending Harley’s look, by explaining the tone of Suicide Squad:

“You know the movie Suicide Squad has a definite look to it, it’s very much a real world look. It’s not a hyper reality, like the Tim Burton movies, you know for instance, when I saw the first Batman movie, the first two. There was a sense, not quite our world, it was a very fantastic world, out of his imagination.”

Dini continues on by mentioning Nolan’s Batman film and how The Joker worked for that film’s world, then he goes back to talking about Suicide Squad, admitting to have not read the script and mentioning Leto’s Joker:

“Footage I see from Suicide Squad, from what I’ve seen, I’ve seen online.  I haven’t read the script or anything, Jared Leto version of that, is almost like a decadent rock star.”

After defending Leto’s Joker look for a bit, he goes back to defending about Harley Quinn’s look in the film:

“I know it’s jarring to a lot of the people who love the classic Bruce Timm suit, I love it myself. But in that world, I just don’t see it happening. It’s a rougher, more street look. I think it works fine. I think Margot is very nice, she’s a very wonderful actress, certainly very attractive and very talented and I think she can you know, I’m very excited to see that interpretation of Harley. Something about the character is like– Yeah, I created her, but on the other hand, I know that you know she’s other people’s toys at some point and I can’t get too possessive over that, I have no creative stake in the movie at all. I can just go pay my 12 bucks and hope to enjoy it and say, ‘Well, well that was interesting.’ it’ll be fun, it’ll be fun to see what they’ll do with her.”

Dini goes on to praise the Batman on the Joker car scene from the Suicide Squad trailer:

“I do have to say, when I did see the footage online of the Ben Affleck Batman, on the Joker’s purple car, hammering to get in and they’re both kind of laughing at him. I was going at one point ‘How many times have I started an episode with that?’ That’s Joker’s millions, that’s Harley and Ivy. You know, it’s the big purple car, trying to escape from Batman. I called up Alan and I said ‘Click on this’ and he did, and I said — Would you ever believe that someone would actually film that, for all the times we have put stuff like that  in the episodes? I thought that was pretty cool.”

Dini also goes on to praise Ben Affleck after the interviewer states that Ben Affleck looks exactly like the Batman from the animated series.
