The cable network Epix has officially picked up a Alfred Pennyworth prequel series titled Pennyworth. The television series will be a 10-episode, will be an origin story about Batman’s best friend and butler. Pennyworth will help brings Epix into the genre space that many networks have taken on.
Gotham show runner Bruno Heller will once again lend his hands in a Batman prequel series with Pennyworth. But it’s been confirmed that the series won’t be a direct spin-off of Gotham, as actor Sean Pertwee, who played Alfred Pennyworth Gotham is not involved with the series, as casting for the young Alfred is still underway.
The series will follow the origins story of Alfred as a former British SAS soldier who forms a secret company and goes to work with Bruce’s father Thomas Wayne in 1960’s in London, England.
Epix President Michael Wright had this to say on the series pick-up:
“As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series, we can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny — along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon — on this fantastic origin story.”
There’s no word about when the series will premiere on Epix.
