According to The Wrap exclusively, writer and director James Gun who’s best known for writing and directing the successful Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is in talks with Warner Bros. to write the second installment to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.
The report by The Wrap also states that the studio is eyeing James Gunn to direct the movie, which comes as a surprise, because as far as we know, director Gavin O’Connor is still very much on-board to direct and has also since been writing the script to Suicide Squad 2.
Though according to Justin Kroll of Variety, O’Connor’s script ended being almost identical to that of Birds of Prey and when that movie got the green-light by Warner Bros. before Suicide Squad 2, O’Connor got frustrated and left the project:
On the Gavin O’Connor front in relation to SS2, hearing the story he had for the sequel ended up almost being identical to the BIRDS OF PREY story and when that film was given the go ahead to go before SQUAD 2, O’Connor grew frustrated and fell off project to do HAS BEEN instead

This past July Gunn was fired by Disney from continuing work on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise after years-old tweets in which he joked about rape and pedophilia were uncovered.
There’s no official word by Warner Bros. or anyone else attached to the movie confirming this report, as of right now fans should take it with a grain of salt and wait for some official announcements.
