The actual box office numbers are in for David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! and the movie officially opened in its premiere weekend at 53.4 million, making it the number one movie at the domestic box office. The opening weekend number doesn’t include the early access Fandango screenings that took place in March, when include the total gross domestically increases to $56.7 million
For opening weekend box office number for a DC Extended Universe movie, Shazam! is lowest, but Shazam! is also the first DCEU movie to cost less than $100 million in production cost and didn’t nearly have the same marketing cost for Warner Bros. as the other films.
Now when including the foreign box office numbers of $102 million, the movie stands at $159 million at the worldwide box office, which is almost double of its $80 million production budget. This is great news, as the movie will start making straight profit for Warner Bros. within its second week in theaters.
In other words, fans shouldn’t be surprised when Warner Bros. offically announces a sequel to Shazam! or the production start date for Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam origins movie that’s been in development for a few years now.
