Activate Office 365, Office 2016, or Office 2013

In many cases, Office 365 and Office 2016 activate automatically. If you're not prompted to activate, you can start using Office right away. If Office needs to be activated, you'll see one of the screens below.

If you see "Sign in to set up Office"

If you already subscribe to Office 365, select Sign in.

If you bought Office 2016 or Office 2013 as a one-time purchase, and you have already redeemed your purchase at Office.com/setup, select Sign in and Office should detect your purchase.

If you bought Office through your employer's Microsoft HUP benefit, select I don't want to sign in or create an account and enter your Microsoft HUP product key.

Office is installed as an Office 365 Home trial

You can activate Office as a 1-month trial of Office 365 Home. You can also buy Office, add Office to an existing Office 365 subscription, or enter a product key from a product key card. If you have an older copy of Office, you can install that instead.

A digital Office product key is transmitted to your PC, so you won't need or receive a printed product key. You activate Office by selecting the Activate button and associating your purchase or offer with a Microsoft account. Be sure to activate Office as soon possible. The offer will expire 180 days after you activate Windows.

If you see "Hello, let's activate Office"

Office is installed as a one-year subscription or one-time purchase

If you see "Hi. Let's get your Office"

Shows the opening page for setup.office.com

This is the https://setup.office.com/ page in your web browser. This is where you go to enter a new product key to install a new copy of Office, or to start or renew an Office 365 subscription. You must enter a Microsoft account before you can enter your product key. A Microsoft account is required for Office 365, Office 2016, and Office 2013.

If you see the Activation wizard

If you install Office 365 or Office 2016 yourself, Office will activate automatically, if possible. You will only see this wizard if Office needs your help to activate.

If you install Office 365 or Office 2016 yourself, Office will activate automatically, if possible. You will only see this screen if Office needs your Microsoft account, or work or school account, to activate. Enter your account and password to activate Office.

If you see the Enter your product key screen

If you bought Office through your employer's Microsoft HUP benefit, you must enter your Microsoft HUP product key. (Signing in won't work for Microsoft HUP purchases.)

If Office is asking you for a product key to activate Office, in many cases you can enter your Microsoft account instead. This is the account that you used to buy Office or subscribe to Office 365. Just select Sign in with an active account instead and enter the account you used to buy Office or subscribe to Office 365.

If you see "Install limit reached"

Shows the "Install limit reached" error message

If you see this message after you install Office, it means that you have already activated the maximum number of installs that your Office 365 subscription supports. You'll need to deactivate another Office install before you can activate the Office you just installed.

If you see Unlicensed Product errors

Shows a specific error message about why Office is unlicensed

When Office becomes unlicensed, all editing features of Office are disabled. Office can become unlicensed for a number of reasons. For example, if your Office 365 subscription expires, you must renew your subscription to restore all features of Office. If Office was pre-installed on your new PC, you must start an Office 365 Home trial or buy Office to continue using Office.
