When the DC Extended Universe slate was revealed, Dwayne Johnson was announced as playing Black Adam in Shazam. Since than a Black Adam film was announced and now we’ve learn Johnson will sit out of the Shazam film, which is gearing up to start filming in January or February of 2018.
Geoff Johns spoke with Yahoo! and confirmed the rumors of Dwayne Johnson’s status in the DC Extended Universe.
“We haven’t announced any casting yet,” Johns said. “But Dwayne isn’t going to be in this movie. He’s still doing Black Adam, but he won’t be in Shazam!”
Johnson along with DC Films are developing the Black Adam film and will have an eventual confrontation between the two. Johnson has revealed In the past that the version of Black Adam he is playing is the New 52 take, which saw him as more of an anti-hero and less of the villain that was first introduced. No release date for Black Adam has been announced at this time.
Director David F. Sandberg confirmed yesterday that he is directing Shazam and Henry Gayden’s script for the film is coming along nicely and looked very enthusiastic for the project, which is always a plus.
