Since the Superman’s death at the hands of Doomsday in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, many comic book fans and even the general audience knew the character wouldn’t stay dead for very long in the movie universe, because like in the comics, Superman returns in Death and Return of Superman story arc after The Death of Superman (1992), in which like in the film, dies in the hands of Doomsday.
In the story, the Kryptonian robots in his fortress of solitude put Superman in a special healing suit, which happens to be black, that helps him recover from the beating he received from fighting Doomsday. It also sped up the process of re-energizing his powers, when reappears to the public, he has long hair and the black Kryptonian suit. In the story he was a bit more aggressive than the readers had known him to be at the time, he would then of course reappear in his classic costume later on, when he becomes fully healed. But the arc was pretty important to the character’s return. This is also the version that is currently back in the Rebirth story arc.
Justice League is currently filming in London and has been for quite a few months, with many wondering how big of a role Henry Cavill’s Superman will have in the film. Recently Henry Cavill shared a tease on his Instagram of what appears to be a black costume with Kryptonian writing.
While it’s not a full on shot of the suit, its pretty evident that it is in fact a black suit. It would certainly make for a great arc in the movie, if we see his final evolution into the Man of Tomorrow, by having his black suit turn blue throughout the film.
If Superman ends up wearing a black suit in Justice League, this this would not be the first time a black Superman suit would make an appearance in live action, as Dean Cain also wore a black version of his suit in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. In the series the suit given to him by Kryptonians who came to Earth in the episode titled “Battleground Earth“, in the last season of the ABC television series.
Years later Tom Welling who played Clark Kent in Smallville, also wore a black version of a suit, when he dawned the trench coat Superman costume in season nine of The CW television series, before than dawning the red leather jacket with the Superman symbol, in episode 2 of the last season of the series.
Even movie director Tim Burton was set to premiere the black costume in his ill-fated Superman Lives movie, that would star Nicolas Cage as Superman.
Now all that is needed to know is, will he have the long hair? Not to mention with him being there for so long when his character is more than likely entering in half-way through the story, will we see any clones? Or could this tease actually be the introduction of Superman Prime, a future Superman who is quite different from other versions. We already know that Zack Snyder likes to play with the Elseworld versions of the character and with him being from a parallel world it opens the doors to the further in the DC Universe.
