According to The Hollywood Reporter, director and screenplay writer James Gunn, who first was attached as the writer is now in talks to direct Suicide Squad 2, or what is now being called The Suicide Squad.
James Gunn is best known to comic book fans for writing and directing the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, until his firing from Disney due to inappropriate tweets he made years ago. As we previously reported, Gunn was first confirmed to be coming on-board to write the screenplay for the movie, with no words if Gavin O’connor would still directing.
Now it’s clear that O’connor has left the project and Gunn is on to helm the second installment to David Ayer’s sucessful Suicide Squad. Though according to sources with The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn’s Suicide Squad will be taking a different direction to that of Ayer’s first movie, with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors and that the movie will have more of a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe to it.
In other words it seems like Warner Bros. is softly rebooting David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, which did amazing at the box office and was a commercial success, but wasn’t well received by the critics… in our opinion the latter shouldn’t matter.
The Suicide Squad has been slated to be released in theaters August 6th, 2021.
