Matt Bomer, who recently starred in Magic Mike XXL spoke with Happy Sad Confused Podcast about the Brett Ratner directed Superman film titled Superman: Flyby that eventually turned into Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns.
Matt Bomer was cast as Clark Kent/Superman with Amy Adams cast as Lois Lane, of course Amy Adams would eventually get cast the same way Henry Cavill was also almost Superman for what would have become Superman Returns and is now playing the role in the DC Extended Universe. When the plans for the film fell through Brett Ratner went over to direct X-Men: The Last Stand, while Bryan Singer took the reigns after originally signed on to direct X-Men: The Last Stand.
Here is what he had to say:
Brett chose me for the project and then it all fell apart,’ Bomer said. ‘It was a very lengthy process to get the role, I think it was over the course of three months because I went in in a cattle call. It sort of evolved from there.
‘It was a month of, “Okay, looks like this is going to happen”. And then it slowly fell apart. I have zero regrets about that, I feel like I’ve gotten to do such a rich array of roles in so many different things.
‘I haven’t been too locked in… I mean that’s a very iconic role to portray, to suddenly be that character in everyone’s minds forever.’
Bomer said the Superman movie was ‘completely different’ to the darker takes that Superman Returns and Man of Steel took, saying it was ‘very light-hearted’ in many ways.
‘It focused on him much more when he was younger and in college,’ he said.
For those wishing he had gotten the role for that particular take he was fortunate enough to not only voice the character in Superman: Unbound, but also play the role in some Toyota Prius CW Japanese Commercials, complete with John Williams score.
So congratulations to him for still being able to get the role in some form.
Below are his Superman appearances as well as a short interview he did for Superman: Unbound. You can check out the podcast where he discusses Superman: Flyby in the link above.
