After it was announced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was set to star and direct Sandman, that he was leaving the project due to creative differences with New Line Cinema, a shock-wave was felt through much of the internet from fans.
Enough so that Neil Gaiman, the co-creator of the character Sandman and executive producer on the live action film, took to his Twitter to speak on the news of Joseph Gordon-Levitt departure.
Gaiman also clarifies to fans that while he created the character, DC Comics owns Sandman and that he never did own any of it. He also talks about whether he’s worried about the chances of the quality of the film may go down now.
And, for the record, my respect for @hitRECordJoe, is undiminished. Getting to know him was the best bit of the last round. He's special.

Reminder for the curious: I don't own SANDMAN. @DCComics does. I don't choose who writes scripts, the director, producer or cast.

I didn't lose them: I never owned them. The deal was done when I was 26, long ago, & I figured it was worth it. https://t.co/SHqC39XU5p

Is your question Were the Sandman books/comics worth it? I know Sandman wouldn't have happened without @DCComics. https://t.co/6NZe47nvJ4

For me, what's important is the 2,500 pages of SANDMAN, not a movie that may or may not ever happen. https://t.co/6NZe47nvJ4

If it was bad enough, yes. Howard the Duck was once a critically acclaimed comic, then it became a bad movie… https://t.co/h3tyG5dVsX
