Swamp Thing Live Action Series Coming to DC Universe

As we mentioned in our previous report, the DC Universe streaming service announced a new Swamp Thing series is being developed with Aquaman director James Wan working as Executive Producer.

Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman are writing the pilot and are serving as executive producers. James Wan and Michael Clear will also executive produce via Wan’s Atomic Monster banner. Rob Hackett of Atomic Monster will serve as co-producer. Atomic Monster will produce in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Mark Verheiden is known for writing several DC comics stories, as well as serving as writer on a Teen Titans script in 2007, Smallville and Constantine, where he was also an Executive Producer and he recently worked on the very successful Netflix series Daredevil too.

Gary Dauberman is known for writing many horror related movies, such as Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, Annabelle 3 and The Nun, all of which James Wan is a Producer on. Dauberman also co-written It: Chapter 1 and It: Chapter 2.

Having writers like these who understand the character and tone sounds like a promising start. It’s possible that with Mark Verheiden involved that Matt Ryan’s Constantine can make an appearance, seeing  as John Constantine first appeared in a Swamp Thing story.

SYNOPSIS:

The drama follows what happens when CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus. There, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be gone after all.

This isn’t the first time Swamp Thing’s been given the live action treatment. Horror director Wes Craven directed Swamp Thing in 1982 starring Ray Wise as Alec Holland, Dick Dourok as Swamp Thing,  Adrienne Barbeau who went on to voice Catwoman in the DC Animated Universe as Alice Cable AND Louis Jourden as Abby Arcane.

A sequel followed called The Return of Swamp Thing with Heather Locklear and Sarah Douglas who played Ursa in Superman / Superman 2 and a live action television series that connected to the films called Swamp Thing: The Series.

The new series is schedule to launch in 2019.
