Deadline has exclusively announced that Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time) is in line to direct The New Gods, based on the DC Comics creation by Jack Kirby in February 1971, which takes place in an entire world of Gods, between the natives of the twin planets of New Genesis and Apokolips, with characters such as Orion, High Father and Darkseid getting their first appearance in the series.
DuVernay’s newest feature A Wrinkle in Time opened in second place at the domestic box office, with Black Panther at number one, making history as two black directors having the two top spots in the same weekend.
DuVernay has previously tried to get her foot in the door to direct a superhero film, first with Black Panther, but being unable to come to an agreement, now she gets to fulfill that wish with The New Gods. She Tweeted back in December of last year her love for The New Gods, she was likely already in talks with Warner Bros. at that time.
Gosh, that's hard. Big Barda. Many reasons. #askava https://t.co/3qxGDq7mHe

Justice League villain Steppenwolf first appeared in The New Gods #7 and often work under his nephew Darkseid. Many references to The New Gods were made in Justice League.
This is a huge push for equality among female and African American directors. While its been shown that more female directors are wanted by the public, it’s usually when the movie has a female lead character, with The Punisher: War Zone being an exception, so its nice to see that limitation being shattered as well, as The New Gods not only had female characters, but majority male characters.
