Deadline is reporting that Gavin O’Connor (Warrior, The Accountant) is in line to write and direct Suicide Squad 2. The film will bring back Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker.
According to Variety, who added to the news, this could be the film that gets started production by next year. Justin Kroll, who reported the news on Variety also reported on a Fall 2018 possible production start.
Suicide Squad was written and directed by David Ayer, who opted to direct Gotham City Sirens instead of returning for this film and since then the film has looked for a new writer and director.
Gavin O’Connor has a great working relationship with Warner Bros. and is returning to write and direct the sequel to The Accountant, which will bring back Ben Affleck in the role. The fight scenes in The Accountant showed how well Gavin O’Connor is able to direct action and hopefully he is ale to bring back Ben Affleck as Batman in the Suicide Squad sequel.
Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed the news yet, but is likely considering Gavin O’Connor was on the shortlist for a while now.
