The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Warner Bros. is in early talks with Mel Gibson to direct Suicide Squad 2. Sources claim that he has begun his research in the universe to get a better feel for them, if he decides to officially sign on. The article states that Gibson’s latest film Hacksaw Ridge, which has become Oscar nominated is what made Warner Bros. confident in courting him. There is no word on if a deal was made that it will include him in a role, but I would be remiss if I didn’t think that will be in the cards as well.
It’s interesting that Gibson is even considering the position, as he recently made comments toward the Superhero genre that would make you think he would want nothing to do with the genre and more specifically Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
THR is also reporting that director Daniel Espinosa is also being looked at as a possible choice for the gig. With David Ayer busy in early development on Gotham City Sirens, it nice to know they are still moving forward on other projects.
Both directors have had great success in their field, both are also great writers, which could help in deciding who directs the film. No offer or commitment has been made at this time. Warner Bros. has not commented yet either.
Meanwhile Variety is reporting that in addition to Gibson and Espinosa being on a shortlist , directors Ruben Fleischer (30 Minutes or Less)and Jonathan Levine (50/50) are also being approached.
Justin Kroll, the writer from Variety also went to Twitter to add some more information on the story.
